参数化设计(parametric design)即将模型中的定量信息变量化,使之成为任意调整的参数。参数化设计与数字建造(digital design and manufacturing)作为近年来新兴的设计手段,不仅可以减轻重复建模带来的压力,更可以为设计提供新颖的想法和思路,最终构建出规律而优美的造型。

那么,当数字设计与制造遇到传统的竹编工艺,又将碰撞出怎么样的火花呐?今年秋天,让我们与来自新加坡科技设计大学(SUTD)建筑与可持续设计系(Architecture and Sustainable Design)的Felix Raspall助理教授和Felix Amtsberg博士后研究员一起探讨这个话题。通过传统竹编的参数化设计,在体味整个设计过程的同时,理解参数化设计理性而又感性的一面。

一、课程概述

本课程主要的目的在于训练学生们高效地对某种材料进行调查研究,对其通性、特性进行全面而深入的调研,并使用这些成果去进行创新设计。对于材料和技术的选择,我们往往基于中国的一些传统工艺。我们将会对这种特定的材料进行分析研究,将传统与创新结合,做出优秀的设计。我们会对这种材料进行深入的研究,包括探访传统的工艺大师,对已有的工艺品进行分析等等。本次课程针对的是中国的一种传统材料——竹,尤其是竹片的编织技术。

二、课程介绍

作为一种生长快速、可再生的资源,竹子似乎是一种用于可持续设计的好材料。然而,现在对于竹子的处理仍然是以老式的工艺为主,其工艺水平也在逐渐下降。它的应用仅限于筷子、竹夹、切割板等琐碎的物件。

随着参数化设计在当代设计的中开辟了新的设计方向、表达方式和材料选择,我们的课程旨在于发现竹子的参数化设计可能性,重新构想新时代的竹制产品。

在这门课中,学生将学习设计计算技巧,深入了解竹子的材料特性和制作策略,并运用这些知识,以竹子为主要材料构思自己的设计。参数化建模和计算机数字控制(CNC)将是本课程的主干,教师将调整内容的水平,以欢迎具有不同专业知识的学生。上午,讲座和软件教程将介绍数字设计和制造的理念、概念和策略。在下午,课程将以工作室的形式进行,学生们将在老师提供设计反馈和技术支持的同时推进他们的项目。

该课程将与传统竹村的主工匠和地方当局直接合作,以促进创意产业作为社区可持续发展的主要方向。该课程将提供一次乡村之旅,作为最终的输出,它将产生完整的工作原型安装或展示。本课程是一个工作室系列的一部分,支持的科研合作在浙江大学和新加坡科技设计大学(SUTD)。SUTD的教师和学生进行的研究将提供背景信息的支持。

简历:Felix Raspall is an architect and design researcher investigating the relationships between design, materiality and technology. He is an Assistant Professor at SUTD, holding a Doctor of Design from Harvard University, a Master of Architecture from Yale University, and B.Arch. from the University of Buenos Aires. He leads his own professional practice in Argentina.

九、Course Description

As a fast-growing, renewable resource, bamboo presents rich opportunities for more sustainable designs. However, bamboo remains primarily associated with old-fashioned craft, its craftsmanship is rapidly declining and it use limited to trivial applications such as chop sticks, card holders or cutting boards. As digital technologies open new design directions, expressions and material options with a strong imprint in contemporary design, the course Bamboo in Formation investigates the creative use of digital design as means to rethink bamboo products in the 21st century.

In the course, students will learn design computation skills, gain in-depth knowledge of the material properties and fabrication strategies of bamboo and apply this knowledge to conceive their own designs using bamboo as main material. Parametric modeling and computer numeric control (CNC) will be the backbone of the course, and the instructors will adjust the level of the content to welcome students with different levels of expertise. During the morning, lectures and software tutorials will introduce ideas, concepts and strategies in digital design and manufacturing. During the afternoons, the course will work in a studio format, where students will advance their projects while the instructors provide design feedback and technical support.

The course will engage in direct collaboration with master craftsmen and local authorities from the traditional bamboo village of Bai Zhang, aiming to promote creative industries as main direction for the sustainable development of their community. The course will offer a trip to the village and as a final output, it will produce full-scale working prototypes to be installed or showcased in Bai Zhang. The course is part of a studio series, supported by the research collaboration between Zhejiang University and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). Previous research conducted by SUTD’s faculty and advanced students will provide background information as support for the class.
