Bio: Professor Peter Childs FREng is the Co-Director of the Energy Futures Lab and Professorial Lead in Engineering Design at Imperial College London, and Chairperson at BladeBUG Ltd and Q-Bot Ltd. His professional interests include creativity tools and innovation, design, heat transfer and rotating flow, sustainable energy and robotics. Former roles include director of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre for Aero-Thermal Systems, director of InQbate and professor at Sussex University, Founding Head of the Dyson School of Design Engineering at Imperial. He has contributed to over 200 papers, and books on engineering design.

Learning theories commonly considered in higher education include behaviourism, humanism, cognitivism and constructivism. Each of these has held sway for a period and has contributed to our understanding and ability to develop and deploy evidence-based curriculums and learning environments. This presentation considers the contributions of these learning theories and their relevance to the design, engineering and hybrid domains, with a particular focus on the recently developed curriculum for an integrated four-year full-time masters (MEng) in Design Engineering at the Dyson School of Design Engineering Imperial College London together with the background, motivation and rationale for its creation. The presentation will explore the current state of engineering and design teaching, the potential for these subjects, the emergence of opportunities in design engineering, and based on this analysis, a manifesto for the fusion of design thinking, engineering thinking and practice within a culture of innovation and enterprise that underlies the curriculum for the new Meng degree.  Alternative options and building blocks for curriculum content design engineering are discussed along with evidence for particular pedagogic, research-led, design-led and innovation-led approaches.

Bio: Peter Hasdell is an architect, urbanist and academic. He is the Associate Dean of Academic Programmes in the School of Design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. A graduate from the University of Sydney and the Architectural Association, London, he has practiced, researched and taught in Europe, North America and Asia since 1994, including the Bartlett School (UCL) and the Berlage Institute (TU Delft). He has been a key member of internationally known research institutes including Chora, C.A.S.T, established and directed A+URL and currently runs In-situ Project http://insitu-project.com/ with Kuo Jze Yi as a practice-based research. His current research focuses on metabolic design on the scales of the city (city as a life form, urban sustainability and ecology), and as architecture (interactive and responsive architectures, circular materiality).

Peter Hasdell established Insitu Project in 2015 as a trans-disciplinary research by design platform. Insitu Project works with villages to enable sustainable practices in social, economic and environmental factors through local interventions. Initiating processes that enable community competencies by aligning resources, opportunities and organization, it seeks to enable community resilience. This approach to rural development is not only a physical or technical or functional solution, but is one that aligns both the hardware and the software of the project in an integrated design approach involving circular economy practices that create value, increase community cohesion and share benefit.

The presentation will reference two key projects by Insitu Project: Miaoxia Community Projects and Zhoushan House of Dreams. It will outline how the alignment of localised socio-material conditions and resources with consideration of the habits, patterns and values of the inhabitants is necessary (McGetrick & Jun 2009) for a more sustainable rural development approach. Social design can, with careful positioning, have a role in these contexts as it re-values and reconfigures existing bottom up ‘oikos’ (the root of both ecology and economy) from the stakeholders perspective. As a contextual practice engaging the social, working “in an economy of reciprocity” (Janzer & Weinstein 2014), this generates design-research processes aimed at social innovation. The inherent social enterprise and knowledge transfer processes can become strategic directives and motivation able to instigate and drive larger social changes through design.
