Prof. Petri Suomala

芬兰阿尔托大学副校长 / Vice President of Aalto University, Finland

Professor Petri Suomala is the Vice President for Education at Aalto University as of September 2018. Before Aalto, he held the same position at Tampere University of Technology, where he steered the development of educational offerings within the merger process of three universities in Tampere region. Dr. Tech. Petri Suomala has worked at Tampere University of Technology also as Professor of Profitability Management and Management Accounting since 2009. He was appointed Head of Department of Industrial Management in 2011, Dean of Faculty of Business and Built Environment in 2014 and Vice President for Education in 2016. Professor Suomala headed also the Tampere University of Technology Cost Management Center (CMC) Research team, and worked as Adjunct Professor at Lappeenranta University of Technology, Industrial Engineering and Management, focusing especially in business economics.

Complex challenges that we face both as nations and as a global community call for professionals capable of efficiently and effectively working together and leveraging individual competencies in a systemic way.Aalto University has a ten-year history in combining technology, design and business education for the benefit of both students and society at large. Two main strategies have been used: 1) students have been provided with flexible study paths and collaboration platforms, which enable inclusion of elements outside one’s main study field, and 2) the university has created structures for encouraging collaboration – co-creation of education – between teachers in a cross-disciplinary fashion. Investment in online teaching and learning, working-life connections as well as in student well-being have set the foundation for this endeavor.In the presentation, some of the key ingredients and achievements of this decennial development will be addressed – including the concept of cross-cutting programmes, university wide studies, Design Factory and entrepreneurial ecosystem.
